PILC director, Jean Demars: “This win is for all the organisations and movements we work for.”

On Friday night, the PILC team was named the Legal Aid Firm/Not-For-Profit Agency of the year at the LALY awards.

The judges had their work cut out for them to choose between the amazing work done and the different approaches taken by all of the firms and law centres who were nominated. We were up against stiff competition in the Legal Aid Firm/Not-For-Profit Agency of the year category. Runners up were the Harrow Law Centre and Wilsons Solicitors whose work we know and are full of admiration for.

We were so thrilled to win that all the team piled onto the stage to accept the award.

A chance to reflect and celebrate

This win is a great opportunity to highlight and celebrate the work of our colleagues in the litigation team, who are so dedicated and work tirelessly out of the spotlight.

We’re so proud of the work we’ve done to build the organisation from the ground up. It hasn’t always been easy but it’s worth it. A special thanks to the Law Centres Network and Camden Community Law Centre who hosted us when we became homeless.

We’d also like to thank everybody who took the time to write and send testimonies about our work, and to all those who’ve funded and supported our work over the past 7 years. We would not be here without you!

Movement lawyering for the win

The win is recognition of our movement lawyering model. We use the law as a tactic to support grassroots groups, activists and campaigners fighting for social and environmental justice. By putting the power of the law into communities and social movements, they can fight back to bring about meaningful change for working class and marginalised communities.

We feel really motivated by this win and we’ll continue to work really hard to challenge systemic injustice through legal representation, strategic litigation, research and legal education. Thank you!
