Free Political Prisoners and defend the right to protest

Defend our Juries launched their ‘Free Political Prisoners’ campaign in response to the sentencing of Just Stop Oil protesters. Their aims are to  

1 To put a stop to the role of arms and oil industry lobbyists, such as Lord Walney, in drafting laws that criminalise those who expose the violence and lies of those industries. 

2 To ensure that everyone who has taken reasonable and proportionate measures to prevent mass loss of life has the opportunity to properly present that as a defence to criminal charges. 

3 To end the jailing of people for taking peaceful action to protect life in accordance with uphold international law. 

They recently assembled at the Royal Courts of Justice over the imprisonment of 16 political prisoners who received a combined total of 41 years in prison for peaceful protest, in what has been condemned internationally as a breach of human rights.

We also saw the brutal arrest of peaceful protesters at the national demonstration for Palestine early this month which is exposing further the extreme authoritarianism this Labour government is prepared to utilise to silent dissent.  

Our client in the Spycops Inquiry, who is also a national officer of Stop the War, Chris Nineham was one of over 70 arrested at the demo. In response, 50 MPs and 40 Legal experts have provided political and legal condemnation of the policing of protests and protesters.
